50’s night

so my good friend and i decided to dress in 50’s style last night and go out to our favorite martini bar. luckily, i own just the appropriate ensemble for this! with my lovely cafe au lait dress with large chocolate and teal roses, pearls, gloves, and an amazing hat (borrowed from my mother). i was all set!really wanted to break out my southern accent here.

have you ever had everyone at the bar turn and look at you as you walk in? well, i have. apparently it’s not that often that someone walks in wearing a teal pill box hat with a veil. everyone over the age of 30 just loved it, most people my age were pretty much wondering if  i was off my rocker or not. *wry grin* makes me think of that lovely alice in wonderland quote “You’re entirely bonkers. But I’ll tell you a secret. All the best people are.” haha. it’s true. Continue reading

cookies, part duex

so i got bored again. i suppose i should be used to it after a few weeks. wouldn’t you think? ugh…

so boredom= me+ reading + baking cookies apparently. who knew?

this time it’s Russian Tea Cakes and  mary’s sugar cookies from the last time. which i never did post pictures. i should fix that.

you may know russian tea cakes as mexican wedding cookies, apparently they’re the same thing. i only learned that a few years ago. i blame it on being from the midwest. Continue reading

every christmas when i was a kid we would make sugar cookies and decorate them with frosting and those shaped candy sprinkles. we (my brother and i) picked ones out specially for santa and even left carrots for the reindeer. when my brother and i outgrew santa we continued to decorate cookies. well, at least my mom, my friends and i. heck i even had a cookie “cake” one year, since i’m not a cake fan.

this is the best sugar cookie recipe: Mary’s Sugar Cookies from the Betty Crocker Cooky Cookbook. you can actually get a reprint of the cookbook. i’ve really got to pick one  up since my favorite cookies are from that book.

i’ll post some pictures of the decorated cookies later. i’ve got the dough in the fridge chilling before we roll’em out to cut and bake. it’s really only a baking project for a large group. after awhile the decorating gets old. haha. and i start decorating them as my “five year old self” would do. it doesn’t really matter how they look, they just taste amazing! they don’t last all that long in our house, maybe 3 days? i’ll definitly be sending some home with the friends who are helping decorate them. i don’t need to eat them all!
